A HACKATHON & A SOCIAL ENTERPRISE CONFERENCE
On September 4 to 6, 2015, more than a hundred environmental advocates and app developers will gather to discuss and devise technology-based solutions to climate change during this year’s edition of Hack-the-Climate: a joint conference and hackathon, co-hosted with Watson Institute Philippines and organized by Red Wizard Events & PR Strategists.
Like last year’s hackathon, #HTCxWatson (official hashtag of the event) or HackTheClimatexWatson, as this year’s event is dubbed, will explore different aspects of climate change mitigation and resiliency. Conference participants may select to attend up to two break out sessions, which are designed to provide them with a deeper grasp of the key challenges faced by organizations in their areas of interest. Disaster Response, Environmental Protection, Marine & Wildlife Protection, Green Technology, Ecotourism, Waste Management, Renewable Energy and the role of the young people in climate action comprise this year’s topics.

In contrast to last year’s Hack-The-Climate, however, this year’s event has an added focus on social entrepreneurship. Environmentally sustainable enterprises like Taclob, Handcrafted By Harls, & Hapinoy will be featured alongside some of the biggest climate change advocates in the country, such as Climate Change Commission, WWF-Philippines, Climate Reality, Greenpeace, Conservation International, Marine Wildlife Watch of the Philippines, One Million Lights, Let's do it Philippines and Rapper's Move.ph among others.
To design the social entrepreneurship component of the conference, the organizers decided to tap Watson Institute Philippines – an accelerator program for young social entrepreneurs headquartered in Boulder, CO.

“Our goal is for our participants to not only come up with innovative apps and devices, but economically sustainable start-ups. This is the most practical way to ensure that their tech creations will continue to grow and make a difference, long after the hackathon is over. We also wanted to open this year’s event to individuals who may not know how to code, but who are equally passionate about protecting the environment. Social entrepreneurship is one of the most accessible and effective ways for people to implement solutions and affect change,” said Project Head and Watson Institute Community Builder Raya Buensuceso.
The Social Enterprise Conference will be held at the 5th floor Henry Sy, Sr. Hall of the De La Salle University, Taft Avenue on September 4, while the Hackathon is set on September 5-6 to be held at Microsoft Philippines, 8th floor 6750 Ayala Avenue Makati.
For those who are interested to participate in the Social Enterprise Conference or join the hackathon, registration is open until September 1, 2015.
